AM I JINXING IT??? I’ve been riding Connell with a shorter stick, and it hasn’t been the best, so I decided to dig out the long stick again.

I decided this with the understanding that it may very well not be there. Honestly, I found it again as I mentioned here, and that had been after about six months gathering dust behind the big set of shelves. The notion that it would remain unfound seemed, well, unfounded. I have put things down outside the loo and come out, moments later, to find them gone. So, you know, it’s in the lap of the Gods.

Still there! I’ve noticed that sometimes just the sight of a long stick puts manners on a beastie. As we did rather well today, and as I didn’t even need to touch Connell more than twice or three times with it, the mere presence of the long stick is doing its job.

As I hid it again after the lesson, Anne Marie was hanging around. ‘I trust you,’ I muttered as I winkled it back into its magic hiding place. ‘I’ve seen you do this before!’ she laughed, and yeah, I had to laugh too. It’s probably not as slick as I think, but so far, so good…

Okay, the thing is, since the injury, which was last year, I have been falling off.

Anyway: A couple of weeks ago, I realised halfway through a lesson that my left foot was in the stirrup as it should be, that there was no tug in the Achilles, and that the arch seemed… okay. It was the first lesson in a long time that I really rode. Jelly legs afterwards and all that. Excellent.

I’ve also been easily psyched out by Connell and jumping. Is he going to stop? Are we going to make it over that fence? That’s all on me, and since I’ve felt better, foot-wise, I’ve been slowly, slowly, getting back in control.

So when he ran out of the second fence of three-in-a-row, at the last possible minute, and I felt myself begin to slide… Read the rest of this entry »

Geez, guess this what happens when I get stuck into a book proposal.

Also, I suppose what happens when one is five years on, and still no ‘own’ horse…

FIGURES OF EIGHT

Almost six years on from my first ever riding lesson, these posts are still wandering round and round, a figure of eight starting with today, probably, and yesterday, definitely. It's the antithesis of how I usually do things, but... that's horses for ya.
